Oscar Piastri was Alpine’s reserve driver last year but is now gearing up for his F1 debut with McLaren, but admits the team’s pre-season testing has not gone well.
Oscar Piastri: “It has been 12 years since I started racing and everything that has happened so far has been a preparation for that. So now, on the eve of the first race of the season, I naturally have a special feeling.
I had to miss last year, and during this time I felt how much I love motorsport. To participate in races, even if things are not going well, is better than not racing at all. That’s why I’m even more thirsty for success now, I’m in a good mood and I want to get started as soon as possible.
Last year I didn’t race, but I worked hard in the tests, although it is clear that this cannot be compared to the situation where you have to fight with many opponents on the track. I’ve also worked on the simulator and although it can’t capture the atmosphere of a real race either, I did everything I could to prepare for this weekend.
When we talk about our team, it’s probably somewhere in the middle. The tests didn’t go very smoothly, but I think tomorrow we’ll get a better idea of how we look compared to our rivals.
Piastri was also asked to compare the updated layout of the track in Barcelona with that up to and including last year and the Australian gave a clear answer: “I have already tried this configuration. In my opinion it is better than the previous version with a chicane at the end of the circle, because this sector was rather slow and somehow inorganic. And now it is much more interesting to pass it on.”
