Fernando Alonso is preparing for the first weekend in the Aston Martin. The two-time Formula 1 world champion thinks his team has a good chance, but the balance of power will become clear after three races of the season.
Fernando Alonso: “Before the first race of the season, the feeling is always the same. There’s been less and less pre-season testing in recent years, so it’s probably not 100% done. In my case, this is associated with a change of team, getting to know a new car – it takes more time to adapt. At least all the riders are on an equal footing, so let’s get the season started.
We performed the tests well, but we don’t know what programs the others were running because they were focused on their tasks. After the first race, the joining of forces will become clearer, but I would draw conclusions after the stages in Jeddah and Australia – the first three Grands Prix will be held on different types of tracks, so it will be easier to draw conclusions.
Aston Martin’s job is to take a step forward from last year. In 2022 the team had problems with the car, but they managed to improve during the season. This year the car is better, so for now we are happy.
We have a very ambitious project, on which talented specialists are working, striving for success, for victories in the near future. This was a pleasant surprise for me. I can say that everyone works together. We understand how seriously we set ourselves the task, but we have ambitions.
Can I win the race this season? I don’t know, it’s hard to say now. I’m in better shape than ever, I’m not worried about my age. I will be the first to feel when I am losing something in piloting or no longer motivated to get up in the morning, go to practice, come to tests and race weekends.
Moving to a new team always adds motivation. I met new people, I saw a new approach to racing, the philosophy of the car and so on. Of course, this also complicates the task, since there is a lot to learn. If you stay with the old team, winter is more relaxed.
