Video: Grosjean crash in Detroit

Roman Grosjean crashed his car in a serious crash near the end of qualifying for the IndyCar race in Detroit on Sunday night.

Grosjean’s car, who played for the Andretti Autosport team this year, skidded at high speed on the exit of the corner and hit the concrete curb with its left side. Although from the outside it appeared that this blow was not that strong, it led to a suspension failure, the car eventually destabilized, it turned 180 degrees, then there was another, much stronger impact on the barrier.

According to Roman, what happened was a surprise to him.

“I don’t know why it happened. Everything went well for us during practice, and then the car just got out of hand,” the French driver commented after qualifying. “I don’t know what caused the first contact, because I did exactly the same as in the last round.”

Grosjean’s accident was far from the only one this weekend on a city highway built on the territory of Belle Isle Park, which is located on the island of the same name in the Detroit River. But at the same time it was one of the most serious, so the team will have to put in a lot of effort to restore the car and get it ready for the start.

Roman Grosjean finished 12th in qualifying, while Penske’s Joseph Newgarden took pole position. Takuma Sato, another F1 veteran, starts in second place Pato O’Ward, driver of the Arrow McLaren SP team, starts in 5th position, while Markus Erickson, who won the Indy 500 last Sunday, starts in 8th .
