In Bahrain, Red Bull Racing took a double victory, the team’s best result on the track since 2012, when Sebastian Vettel won the race and Mark Webber finished fourth. But according to Adrian Newey, head of technical services at Red Bull, the ease with which the Red Bull Racing riders achieved success in the first stage of the season is only an illusion.
Adrian Newey: “At the start of the weekend in Bahrain, we encountered a number of issues that were not on the tests, including equipment reliability. So we had to put in extra effort, but most of the teams had some problems, because three days of testing is not much.
Given this, it remains surprising that the overall reliability was at a fairly high level.
During training, it turned out that the behavior of the car does not meet our expectations, and even the external conditions have changed somewhat. It may have looked pretty smooth from the outside, but in fact the situation we found ourselves in on Friday and Saturday had a gloomy side.
It is clear that our new car is a further development of last year’s concept. We have analyzed everything in detail and it is very important that we were able to identify the main weaknesses of the RB18. We’ve tried to make at least minor improvements in many areas and so far everything is going relatively well. But the Bahrain circuit cannot be considered fully representative, it has a number of characteristics, so you have to be careful with predictions, stay realistic and keep working hard.”
