David Sanchez, who was in charge of developing the car’s aerodynamics, left Ferrari after ten years with the Italian team. The decision came after the Bahrain Grand Prix, where the Scuderia clearly performed worse than expected.
The French specialist joined Ferrari in October 2012, headed the aerodynamics department in 2019, took over as chief engineer two years later and was then directly involved in the creation of the F1-75 and SF-23 as head of the department chassis concepts.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Diego Tonga is the main candidate for the position left behind by Sanchez, who will in any case be the most actively involved in the modernization of the chassis. Urgent measures must be taken, because in Bahrain the SF-23 showed an extremely unpleasant defect: the racers are unable to control tire wear due to the high degree of degradation.
It is clear that the results of the first leg of the season did not please either the fans or the team management, as Charles Leclerc retired from the race and Carlos Sainz finished fourth, 48 seconds behind race winner Max Verstappen.
Now Sanchez will have a rather long “sabbatical” in which he will not be able to cooperate with other teams. Rumor has it that since he was one of Mattia Binotto’s closest associates, his resignation is a logical continuation of the policy of Frederic Vasseur, the new team leader. It is worth recalling that Inaki Rueda was also recently removed from the post of chief strategist.
