Audi will make its Formula 1 debut in 2026 as powertrain supplier to the Sauber team. Mick Schumacher has been named as one of the candidates for a place in the team, but Audi’s chairman of the board of directors, Markus Duismann, said he had not yet negotiated with Mick and the presence of a German driver behind the wheel of one of the cars is not a requirement.
Markus Duismann: “At the moment we are talking to many decision makers, including drivers and team managers. We have not had any substantive discussions with Mick Schumacher about his and our obligations.
Of course we are interested in working with German racers, as well as our parent company [Volkswagen Group]however, the presence of a German pilot behind the wheel is not a requirement.
We are not coming to Formula 1 on a whim, but because we want to show everything we are capable of. In all championships in which Audi participated, we tried our best to win, and we always succeeded. The Olympic principle of mere participation does not interest us.”
