Williams has been using Mercedes powertrains since 2014. New team principal James Vowles said the decision on which engines will be on the machines in 2026, when the regulations change, will be made before the end of the year.
James Vowles: “We are pleased with the long-term partnership with Mercedes. For the last 15 years they have produced what are basically the best power units. At some point you have to take responsibility for yourself and not just hope that someone will give you details.
No matter how good the components are, you will not know what your car’s aerodynamic body kit will be until the last minute, because you are completely dependent on the manufacturer.
Now that we are discussing engine delivery in 2026 with Mercedes and other manufacturers, we are analyzing the market to make the best decision for ourselves. It will be accepted this year.
To win a championship you have to see who won it. As a rule, this is a team with support from the manufacturer, we also want to get such support. It’s a tough road ahead of us.”
