During the January round of Formula E in Mexico City, Robin Fryance was seriously injured – a fracture of the wrist and bones of his left hand, when the steering wheel of his car jerked sharply on impact with another car.
After spending a week in a hospital in Mexico City, Friines returned to Europe in late January to continue his rehabilitation. He missed the Formula E rounds in Ed Dirye, Hyderabad and Cape Town, but hopes to be able to compete again in the next race on March 25 in Sao Paulo.
Along with Formula E, Robin will be driving this year’s WEC series in the crew with Ferdinand Habsburg and Sean Gelael – and hopes things continue to develop well.
Robin Friennes: “The break has dragged on, I’m very happy to be behind the wheel again. The past seven or eight weeks have not been easy. This is the worst start of the season in my career. The reason is also that there were some complications with the hand.
I had five fractures – four bones in my hand and one in my wrist. Everything inside was a bit out of place. The doctor immediately said that the fracture was complex, but I did not expect that the recovery would take so long. Now I have 15 or 16 pins and two plates. Movement is limited because I had to stay still for the bone to heal.
Unlike the LMP2 cars, which have power steering, the Formula E’s steering is very heavy. I hope I succeed.”
