Mick Schumacher: We found a way to get tired

Behind the seven races of the season, and thanks to Mick Schumacher earned no points. The Haas rider expects to finish in the top ten next weekend in Azerbaijan.

Q: Will the experience gained in the last stage in Monaco help you on another city circuit in Baku?
Mick Schumacher: The tracks in Baku and Monaco are very different, so it’s important to find your rhythm. I think the track in Baku will seem very wide to us as opposed to Monaco.

Q: There are two DRS zones in Baku and a very long start right. Are we going to see a lot of overtaking this weekend? What are your memories of this match?
Mick Schumacher: I can imagine more different events on the track and overtaking. This year the DRS is not as effective as last year, but the new cars allow us to chase each other closer, keeping the opponent on the last stretch of track. This may even allow overtaking in the first corner without DRS.

Let’s see how it goes. Last year’s race in Baku turned out to be one of the most interesting, so I hope that thanks to a more competitive car we can compete and get a good result.

Q: What result do you expect this weekend? Is the track suitable for your VF-22?
Mick Schumacher: We’ll find out soon. Given the characteristics of our car, we need to be in good condition in Baku. Our car has been competitive on almost every track we’ve driven so far, so I’m looking forward to the stage and hoping for a successful race.

Q: Many teams are still trying to find an approach for the new 18-inch tires. Have you managed to do this yet? What is their biggest difference from last year?
Mick Schumacher: In my opinion, the biggest difference from last year’s tires is that we don’t have to save as much energy as last year. Rear tire wear is no longer the main problem. As a result, the way of driving has also changed – it is now more like the one I used in Formula 2 in 2020. Yes, we are talking about different cars, but warming up the tires still plays an important role.

Usually I fly on my gut feeling and on the tips of the team about working with tires. Now it all comes down to understanding the difference between different compositions from each other, but we managed to find their working range.
