As with the previous round in Monaco, at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the teams will have access to the three softest tire compounds – C3, C4 and C5. The head of Pirelli’s racing division, Mario Isola, explained the reason for this choice.
Mario Isola: “Before the arrival of Jeddah, Baku had the fastest urban highway. However, the loads on the tires are not so high here, because in none of the corners the rubber is exposed to an enormous amount of energy due to the low abrasiveness of the asphalt and low loads. It was the combination of these factors that made it possible for us to bring the same lineups as in Monaco.
That said, the high speeds that affect the tires must be taken into account. In Baku it is important to get grip of the tires with the track, and finding a balance to distribute the load between the front and rear tires will be a major challenge for the teams.
On the one hand, the front tires have to warm up enough not to lose grip due to the drop in temperature that is inevitable on long straights. On the other hand, it is important not to overheat the rear tires when accelerating.
In Baku, the asphalt temperature is constantly changing, so the track can be specifically mentioned with its technical problems, which are the same for everyone. †
