Domenicali: Impossible to switch everyone to electric cars

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, believes that plans to convert the entire European fleet to electric power is not practical or realistic. That is why in Formula 1 they rely on hybrid power plants and try to achieve carbon neutrality in other ways.

“Radical changes in technology and energy demand a flexible mindset. Realizing a fleet of fully electric vehicles is impossible; such an idea will never be realized,” said Domenicali, who took part in the program “Restart” on the Italian TV channel Rai2, where he criticized the EU’s attempts at the legislative level to restrict the sale of new gasoline-powered cars and diesel engines by 2035. .

Reflecting on the attitude of supercar manufacturers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini to the prospect of only producing electric cars, he added: “These ideas are neither viable nor do they inspire confidence in the plans to achieve economic impact with their implementation At the same time, other ways to achieve environmentally friendly goals are becoming more common.

I agree that politicians should impose difficult tasks for society, but the ways to achieve them depend on representatives of business, of companies, because they have full information about existing systems and realities.

When choosing further development paths, it is necessary to act carefully, correctly assess the existing economic ties, supply chains, and European countries should play an important role in this context. And European politicians must take economic reality into account.

Formula 1 has set itself the goal of being CO2 neutral by 2030 and in the short term our sport will become a kind of catalyst for all these processes.”
