Before the weekend in Saudi Arabia, Ferrari Chief Race Engineer Matteo Toninalli spoke about the team’s preparations for the stage at the Jeddah City Circuit.
Q: This week Saudi Arabia is hosting a stage in Jeddah. The race takes place at night on a walled highway with blind curves. What will be your action plan for the weekend?
Matteo Tognalli: I’ve experienced this feeling more than once in my career, but I have to admit it’s particularly strong this time. I feel the passion not only from every employee in Maranello, but also from all the fans.
Q: In this race there is a high chance of red flags, real and virtual safety cars. Have you looked at specific scenarios?
Matteo Tognalli: The tests went well, last week in Bahrain we realized that the car generally meets our expectations. Now you need to fine-tune to maximize its potential.
One thing is clear: the season is long this year, the results of the race in Bahrain will not determine the results.
Q: Riders are often asked what their favorite job is, but which job do the engineers like best?
Matteo Tognalli: We know the circuit in Jeddah well, but changing air and asphalt temperatures, wind and new Pirelli tires will make it difficult to tune the car. However, Carlos and Charles have gathered a lot of useful information, so we’ll be ready.
