Schumacher: If there was a brother in the paddock, Steiner would behave differently

After the premiere of the new season of the documentary series Drive to Survive, they again got talking about the difficult relationship between Haas F1 management and Mick Schumacher, which was one of the reasons why the team decided to replace him with the experienced Nico Hulkenberg.

However, the problems were primarily related to the inconclusive results of the seven-time world champion’s son and to several accidents that cost the American team dearly. Ralf Schumacher, Mick’s uncle, who is working with Mercedes as a reserve driver this year, is also willing to admit this. But his claims to the Haas F1 are different.

“As for Mick, we have to admit that he was too slow in the first half of the season and also did too much damage to the team,” Ralph said in an interview with F1 Insider. – But if all this were discussed within the team, then I would have no questions at all.

Once Eddie Jordan scolded me, but Frank Williams had other methods, but no less harsh. The driver has to deal with it, this is Formula 1. But the problem is that this story is getting more and more publicity, and I don’t understand it. And I also think that Mick has not had a normal chance to really show himself, although he has had good results in some races.

We can only regret that everything turned out this way last year. Steiner is a grown man and he shouldn’t have treated a young rider like that. Everyone should be able to withstand the pressure typical of Formula 1, but it was already too much. And what hurts me the most is this: if my brother were in Formula 1 now, Steiner would behave differently.

I think just having Michael in the paddock would be enough. I’m willing to admit: everyone does what they want. But Mick is a member of our family, and you can understand me: if one of us is treated like this, I don’t like it.”
