Lewis Hamilton: Our gap has only widened

Lewis Hamilton, who took part in the FIA press conference in Jeddah, stressed that this year the gap between Mercedes and the leaders has only widened.

Lewis Hamilton «Our gap has only widened, but not because of the lack of speed on the straights. Last year we were hampered by too much resistance because we had to put on bigger wings, but now we are fast on the straights but lose in the corners.

Red Bull cars accelerate out of corners better and I think during the Bahrain Grand Prix the drivers of this team didn’t even attack at full strength. In fact, they are even faster than they seem. In the first race they were about a second and a half faster than us.

Therefore, our intentions are the same as last year: we must act in a coordinated manner, be one team and try to keep a positive attitude. Of course it is always unpleasant when the car turns out not to be as fast as we would like, but everyone works together to find the right solution.

You can’t suddenly forget how to build good cars, we know what to strive for and we keep working. Now we just have to reorganize: if we always aim for victories before the start of the season and prepare for them, then if this turns out to be unsuccessful, we must focus all our energies on strengthening the team, while continuing to prepare at the races, improve our physical condition and achieve the right mental state.

But all this does not mean that we cannot catch up with our rivals. In our team, no one ever shy away from difficult challenges, we like to solve complex problems. Of course, now I would prefer to fight for victories, but the situation is as it is.
