Sergio Perez’s new contract with Red Bull Racing put an end to Pierre Gasly’s hopes of returning to the championship team in the foreseeable future. Helmut Marko, Red Bull motorsport adviser, said the French driver will be asked to stay with AlphaTauri next season.
Helmut Marko: “The contract was signed on Friday before the start of practice in Monaco, which allowed Sergio to focus on the race weekend. If you remember the history of Red Bull, you will notice one characteristic that sets us apart from other teams: we have continuity and long-term planning, we wanted to close the business for a few years.
Before signing a contract with Perez, of course I spoke with Pierre Gasly. Let’s see what awaits us after 2023. Is there an alternative to it? I don’t think Pierre can find a better match for himself than AlphaTauri.”
Helmut Marko added that Yuki Tsunoda will most likely continue to ride for AlphaTauri next season: “Now we can assume that the current riders will keep their places. However, the coronavirus has not gone away, therefore it is possible that we will need the services of young riders. Of course I hope no one gets hurt, but then our youth will have to wait another year.”
