Last year two teams wanted to sign Oscar Piastri for 2023 – the Australian decided to leave Alpine and opted for McLaren. The first race of the season showed that the McLaren car was inferior in speed to the factory team of the French concern, and in Jeddah Oscar was asked if he regretted his decision to refuse cooperation with Alpine.
“I didn’t have to decide which of the two teams to play for,” Piastri replied. “It was clear to me that I wanted to drive for McLaren. They showed a great desire to get to me, which became a very, very serious factor for me.
Now I have no question whether I regret it or not. I am fully focused on the current work and trying to move the team forward to the positions we want to be. It is clear that we are not satisfied with the current level of competitiveness, but the team does not hide it.
We have developed a modernization plan and we will try to get back to the positions where we want to be, in other words, catch up with the top three or four teams. Now it is difficult to reach the top four level, but we are preparing many new products for the stage in Baku. Let’s see how much they bring in, but these new additions will be a step up from the many others we have planned for the current season.
