Isola: Friday turned out to be interesting – All the news of Formula 1 2023

Pirelli is pleased with the tire performance on the first day of the weekend in Jeddah. The city circuit in Saudi Arabia has the highest number of corners on the calendar, high tire loads and frequent changes of direction, but on Friday everything went without a hitch.

Mario Isola, Pirelli: “Friday turned out to be interesting, especially the second practice, and the first, as expected, was not very informative – the asphalt changed quickly.

The characteristics of the circuit in Jeddah are completely different from those in Bahrain. On the first day of the weekend, the riders focused on setting up and evaluating the Soft and Medium tires. Last year at the start of the circle it was important to control tire wear, but now that we have got rid of understeer after refining the tires and the teams have achieved a better balance, these problems have disappeared. There is some granularity on the Soft, but it has no significant effect on long ranges of circles.

Constantly changing conditions and optimization of settings suggest that in the race the most likely strategy is one pit stop with Medium and Soft tires spaced, also because the difference between these compounds is small – about 0.4 seconds, making them the most fit for the race.”
