Four seasons of the Formula 1 docu-series Drive to Survive have seen the championship grow in popularity worldwide, but interest has grown especially in the United States. Given its success, Netflix decided not to limit itself to filming just the series – the streaming giant’s management decided to compete for the rights to live broadcasts of Formula 1 in the United States.
ESPN currently owns the streaming rights, but the current contract expires at the end of 2022. The television company’s program director, Richard Sachensky, took the stage in Miami for negotiations with championship leadership over the contract extension, with the parties agreeing to further discuss the terms of the new agreement.
According to BusinessInsder, in addition to Netflix and ESPN, Amazon and NBCUniversal Media are also offering to buy live Formula 1 broadcasts in the US. All applicants have the financial means to get Formula 1 on their platform, the only question is whose offer will seem more attractive to commercial rights holders.
