Before the start of the race in Jeddah, Ferrari expected to battle for a spot on the podium, but Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished sixth and seventh, over ten seconds behind third-place winner George Russell. The head of the Scuderia, Frederic Vasseur, admitted that the car did not have enough speed.
Frederic Wasser: “The result cannot be called good. In the first stint we had speed on the Soft and Medium tyres, but there were problems with the Hard tires – they lacked speed. The pace clearly did not match the pace of the opponents.
The hardest thing in my job is to understand what we did and didn’t do after a race like in Jeddah. We see positive results from the weekend – we added reliability, the qualifying pace got much better – on the same lap we are as fast as Mercedes and Aston Martin. As for the race, fate was decided by the second segment and we had no speed.
We were somewhat conservative with the rubber, but it took about one or two tenths of a second, which doesn’t explain much of the lag we had today. The team understands that the car lacks speed – this lack has nothing to do with saving tires.
