FIA announces tender for tires for F1, F2 and F3

The FIA has announced a tender for the supply of tires for three championships – for Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 – for the period from 2025 to 2027, with the possibility of an extension until 2028. In that case, preference will be given to to a manufacturer that pays the necessary attention to environmental aspects.

The Federation is inviting race tire manufacturers to participate in a tender, the winner of which will become the exclusive supplier for these three series, and applications to participate can be submitted from today, March 20.

According to the published press release, the main characteristics of the tires generally remain the same as those of the rubber currently used. The parameters that the rubber must meet are agreed with the owners of commercial rights, as well as with the Formula 1 teams. First of all, we are talking about a certain working range, which reduces the risk of overheating and the degree of degradation. However, this also takes into account such a factor as the creation of conditions for different tactical schemes.

Tire dimensions remain unchanged, ie 18 inches, which includes a practical element: potential suppliers are mass-producing rubber of this landing diameter for mass-produced car models.

One of the terms of the tender is also a mandatory environmental assessment: the prospective supplier must analyze the possible environmental impact of the tires used in Formula 1. To win the tender, the rubber manufacturer must demonstrate how it intends to organize the entire life cycle of the tire – from production to disposal.

One of the required technological innovations is an electronic marking system that is necessary to effectively identify tires during technical inspections.

The tender assumes that the winner will be the supplier of tires for F2 and F3 for the same period. If the technical requirements for tires designed for Formula 1 have already been approved, the parameters of rubber for the youth series will be determined in the next two weeks.
