In 2022, Formula 1 has changed the technical regulations to make overtaking easier and to help drivers close rivals’ heels. Chasing other cars did get easier last season, but the first races of 2023 showed that things had changed for the worse.
“The car in the rough air behind the rival is behaving a little worse than last year,” Carlos Sainz told Britain’s Sky Sports. – Perhaps this is due to the increase in downforce, but now the car behaves about the same as the cars of the previous generation. It has become more difficult to follow the opponent closely and that makes overtaking more difficult.”
McLaren driver Lando Norris agrees with Sainz: “In the race, our car is behaving worse than we had hoped. In the “dirty” air, big troubles begin, which prevent us from closely following rivals.
In Jeddah, Logan Sargent learned from his own experience that if you drive closely behind another car for a long time, the tires quickly become unusable.
“I was quite competitive and after I left the safety car lane I was battling Nico Hulkenberg,” says the Williams driver. “Maybe I attacked too hard in the dirty air, causing my rear tires to lose their effectiveness too early.”
