In the first two races of the season, Fernando Alonso took the podium twice and finished third. Spanish driver Flavio Britaore’s manager has no doubt that Fernando will win this year’s race given the slightest chance.
Flavio Briatore: “At 41 years old, Fernando is faster than twenty-year-old pilots. I never doubted his speed. They said about Fernando that he is too old, that he is not a team player, but this is all nonsense! Just give him a car and he’ll get things done. Fernando is an exceptional racer.
I will not say that the battle for the title is over this year. Aston Martin has a new car, so let’s see how much the team will add by developing the AMR23. Other teams have yet to solve their problems, but Fernando has a car that is easy to understand and to drive. If he gets the chance to win the race, he won’t miss his chance.”
Briatore was involved in Alonso’s negotiations with Aston Martin. Flavio said one of the reasons for leaving Alpine was that the French team viewed Alonso as an elderly rider and did not include him in long-term plans.
“We made a joint decision and took the risk, but it was worth it,” Britatore continues. – At Aston Martin we were offered a two-year contract, while others, referring to Fernando’s age, were offered a one-year contract.
We also knew that Lawrence Stroll was putting together a great team. We saw a drive to improve that was not there at Alpine, for example.
I’ve known Lawrence for 30 years. He is a true Formula 1 enthusiast and successful entrepreneur. He started as a sponsor, bought Racing Point, invited many people from Red Bull and other teams, giving them more responsibility. He invested in a wind tunnel and headquarters in Silverstone. If you want to grow, you have to take these kinds of steps.”
