Ferrari boss Frédéric Vasseur believes the team has made progress in Saudi Arabia compared to the first stage in Bahrain, but Hard tire issues in the second segment of the race prevented Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc from realizing the full potential of the SF-23 car to be realized.
Frederic Wasser: “We are at an early stage of the season so it is too early to draw any conclusions about the balance of power, but we had a good pace in qualifying – we took a step forward and closed the gap Mercedes and Aston Martin Poem. In qualifying Charles was three or even four tenths faster than Aston Martin and Mercedes.
The first part of the race went well too – Charles bounced back on Soft and Carlos showed good pace compared to the rest on Medium. However, we completely lost speed on Hard. It remains to be seen what the problem is and add, but obviously it has to do with how the car worked with different tire compounds this weekend.
Yes, Red Bull was much quicker than everyone else on Hard, but I can’t understand why our car lacks speed in the long run, even though it is fast on one lap. I think we’re not that far from the competition in terms of the car’s potential, but we haven’t been able to unlock it over the weekend.”
