On Friday, not everyone managed to find an approach to the new Australian track configuration, on Saturday morning the teams continued to work, but the track changed – if there were four DRS zones the day before, then there would be three on Saturday.
The condition of the tarmac improved, but off the track the tarmac remained slippery – again there were some crashes, especially when the riders had to go around slower cars.
On the twentieth minute yellow flags first appeared as Lewis Hamilton flew into the gravel, then the session was stopped by the red one – Sebastian Vettel crashed the car into corner 10. The German flew into the gravel safety zone, crossed it – and crashed into the barrier, breaking the front suspension.
Vettel missed two Grands Prix due to Covid-19, starting his season in Australia, but on Friday he was only able to make it through one practice session, losing his second to power plant problems and running out of time in the third.
Ten minutes later the riders were able to start and Verstappen turned almost immediately in the penultimate corner – without consequences for the car.
The second red flags appeared after Lance Stroll crashed five minutes before the end of the session. The Canadian crashed into the gravel at Turn 11 – and also slammed his front suspension against the guardrail. Aston Martin mechanics will have to restore both cars before they qualify. It was decided not to resume the session.
The fastest time was shown by Lando Norris with a lap time of 1:19.117.
