Wolff: Niki Lauda has been missed all these years

Toto Wolff admitted that he still misses Niki Lauda – the legendary Austrian passed away in May 2019, and before that he was actively involved in the management of Mercedes-AMG F1. The three-time world champion was a non-executive director of the team, and at one point it was he who persuaded Lewis Hamilton to move from McLaren to Mercedes, and under him they achieved dominance in Formula 1.

“Niki is sorely missed all these years because he always managed to find simple solutions to complex problems and reduce them to what really matters,” said the head of the Mercedes team in an interview with Stats Perform, a British company specializing in sports analysis. – I need to find out what he would say and how he would act.

Together we acted very effectively when we deliberately simplified this or that situation as much as possible and that sometimes produced immediate results. But there are many different nuances.

Formula 1 is a technical sport and my role was to translate our ideas into the design of the car. And then everything is simple: the stopwatch never lies and telemetry immediately shows what we are missing and what exactly needs to be corrected.”
