McLaren team principal Andrea Stella believes Oscar Piastri will be able to avoid undue pressure during the days of the race weekend in Melbourne, as Australian press and fan interest in his talented compatriot will be huge.
So far the season has not been going well for the Formula 1 debutant – in Bahrain he failed to finish due to technical problems and in Saudi Arabia his MCL60 was damaged in the start turmoil, forcing Oscar to pit straight away and finished in 15th place.
But the 21-year-old Australian has already confirmed his speed when he showed the 9th result in qualifying on a difficult and very fast circuit in Jeddah.
“He’s a very calm guy. I think (in Melbourne) he will be able to isolate himself from all the superfluous, – said Stella. “Of course we will have to make sure that Oscar is focused on the race, that he stays focused and of session to session continues to evolve, and he manages to do so at an exceptionally fast pace.
When we talk about the track in Albert Park, about the properties of the road surface, the level of grip, about the speed in the corners, I think it should all be more like Jeddah than Bahrain. That is why we are preparing for the upcoming race so that we are ready to go to the qualifying final again and then we will fight for the points.”
