Lando Norris is well aware of the reasons why Formula 1 remains an exclusively male sport, but he dreams of motor racing becoming a more diverse phenomenon in all respects. In order for established traditions to change, he believes the selection of racing talent should begin when future motorsport stars are still in their childhood.
“It all starts with an interest in Formula 1, which is constantly growing, thanks in part to the documentary series produced by Netflix,” the McLaren driver argued in conversation with British TV presenter Lissie McIntosh on her YouTube channel. – In general, our sport is dominated by men, but the fact is that many boys want to get into it. And there are only twenty drivers in Formula 1.
Suppose there are a million boys who have the ambition to break into Formula 1, while there are only a thousand girls who dream of it. I’m not good at math, but the chances that one of the guys will achieve this are much higher. Girls’ opportunities are infinitely smaller – simply because there are far fewer girls in motor racing.
The problem is that you have to start racing at a younger age. There are girls in my LN Racing Kart team, but this project is still in development, but Daniel Ricciardo, for example, has already organized his own series, and there children from five to seven years old compete with him – it’s great.
I also want to organize my own series for children from five to eight years old. Of course I have a lot of fans, and if I can do something for them, influence them in some way, help them believe that they have a chance to get into Formula 1, then I will do it.
After all, it is necessary not to talk only about the racer’s profession, although I myself am a racer and argue from my own point of view. There are many different possibilities, for example there are more and more female specialists in McLaren, because there are many different roles and positions in the Formula 1 team. People just don’t know about it.
It’s not just the drivers, mechanics, engineers and team leader. Everyone will find a job, but for this it is necessary that people realize that they have the opportunity to get such a job, and seriously prepare for it.
