In Melbourne, Mick Schumacher was ahead of his partner in qualifying for the first time in the season and set the 15th fastest time. Kevin Magnussen didn’t make it to the second part, but thanks to Alex Albon’s penalty he regains one place on the grid.
Mick Schumacher (15th): “Unfortunately, I ended up in traffic in the last sector of four or five cars. It’s a shame, but it happens. We did our best and chose the right method during the session.
After a meaningless Friday, we were able to partially get the car up to speed again. I hope we compete tomorrow as the car is fast at a long distance and allows you to chase rivals. I hope we can get close behind other cars and overtake.”
Kevin Magnussen (17th): “Although the weekend is not in our favour, we have not been able to find the optimal settings on this track. The team improved a bit, but qualifying was chaotic due to red flags.
I don’t think the result reflects the car’s capabilities at the distance of the race – we can do better. I don’t have the best starting position, so we’ll see, but I’m optimistic because our car is fast in the race.”
Gunther Steiner, Team Principal: “The team has been plagued with problems all weekend and qualifying was no exception. We couldn’t get the tires to work and indeed we have minor problems in all parts of the car.
Now we have to prepare for tomorrow – on Friday we showed good times in the long distance, and now we will try to repeat this in the race and earn points.
