Two minutes before the end of the first session of qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, an accident occurred between Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi, which led to the appearance of red flags.
Nicholas Latifi was radioed to let Stroll through, which he did for his fifth turn. Stroll had already slowed down as he exited the corner – Latifi decided the Aston Martin driver let him pass and began to overtake the Canadian compatriot on the right. Just then, Stroll turned the wheel towards Nicholas and the cars collided.
The stewards assessed the incident and fined Lance Stroll. The Aston Martin driver has received two penalty points and will (formally) lose three places at the start of the Australian Grand Prix.
“The stewards determined that Stroll was more to blame for the accident because he was not sufficiently vigilant when he was overtaken by Latifi,” the decision of the stewards of the Australian stage read.
