While attending a MotoGP round last weekend, Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali came up with the idea of canceling free races at the grand prix. In Melbourne, Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell partly supported Domenicali, calling for a review of the race weekend format and a reduction in the number of free races.
“I think the weekend format can be made more dynamic,” Racingnews365 quoted Lewis Hamilton as saying. – For venues like Monaco, you can find a solution to make it even more attractive for the fans. We have sprint races on some tracks, but maybe something else needs to be thought of.
I like the sprint weekend format where we only have one practice session. As a result, you feel more pressure to do everything right for qualifying, which takes place on the first day. I like that.”
George Russell thinks the reduction in free practice sessions will reduce the workload for mechanics and engineers: “It is in the interest of the 3,000 people who travel the world in Formula 1 to move the first practice session to Friday evening. Then the teams do not have to come to the track on Wednesday.
If the first training takes place on Friday morning, you should be on the track by Thursday at the latest and for most stages this means that you arrive on Wednesday. If the teams can fly to the podium on Thursday morning, this solution with 24 races per season saves almost a month, which employees can spend at home.
That’s why I prefer a sprint format, but on the condition that the first session on the track starts a little later than now.
