Formula 1 has decided to increase the size of the starting grid ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, according to Motorsport.
The decision was made so that the drivers avoid further penalties for incorrect grid positions. The stopping mark of the car will be widened by 20 centimeters (from 2.5 to 2.7 meters).
Earlier, Alpine driver Esteban Ocon and Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso each received a five-second penalty for leaving their cars on the start field outside the designated area. In both cases, the pilots moved too far to the side, although they did not violate the limit before they got an extra five seconds.
The riders insisted that the current cars have extremely limited visibility, which makes it difficult to accurately determine grid location.
The Australian Grand Prix will take place in Melbourne from March 31 to April 2.
