Fernando Alonso finished seventh in Monaco, his best result of the season. The Alpine driver hopes to continue his streak of high-scoring finishes at the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Q: How do you rate the stage in Monaco?
Fernando Alonso: We had a good weekend and earned deserved points. On Sunday we were able to add something compared to Friday, which made it possible to achieve such a result. Normally the races in Monaco are predictable, but this time changeable weather and a controversial tire choice turned the race into chaos.
At the restart we put on Medium tires so in the last part I had to control their wear but when I could attack I created a gap on Lewis Hamilton. Now I’m ready for the Baku race where I want to earn points for the third time in a row.
Q: Do you enjoy performing on city circuits?
Fernando Alonso: Now in Formula 1 there are a lot of urban circuits, and I like them because they don’t leave room for mistakes. In Baku you can overtake and in my previous three races on this track I have regained a lot of positions, so in this respect the stage is very different from Monaco.
Q: Tell us more about the track in Baku from the rider’s point of view…
Fernando Alonso: The track is interesting and you can overtake on it. Baku has a mix of fast sections, slow corners and a really long straight – these factors should be taken into account when choosing your settings. It’s interesting how the 2022 cars will perform on this track, so it’s hard to make comparisons to other tracks we’ve already driven this year.
As usual, qualifying in Baku does not determine the outcome of the race – the safety car can seriously alter the order of forces. I think we’re in for a fun race and an interesting challenge!
