Fernando Alonso: Hamilton has a short memory

After two winning doubles for Red Bull Racing in the opening races of the season, Lewis Hamilton, speaking of the RB19, said he had never seen a car in Formula 1 with such a speed advantage.

However, Fernando Alonso objected to him in absentia in an interview with the French newspaper L’Equipe, recalling that quite recently the overwhelming advantage was on the side of Mercedes, and this period lasted seven years from the moment of switching to hybrid power plants in 2014 to 2020.

Responding to the words of the seven-time world champion, who won almost six titles in a row during this period, Alonso said: “I disagree. In Saudi Arabia I finished 20 seconds behind Sergio Pérez and Max Verstappen, but in 2014 and 2015 he and Nico Rosberg were a minute ahead of everyone else.

After two or three laps they slowed down to save the engines. He has a short memory, must be getting old. When he drives a regular car, it is noticeable that he also has weaknesses. Previously, he did not have to compete with anyone, except sometimes he fought with his partner on the track.

Hamilton holds the record for most pole positions, but this season George Russell is leading the qualifying rounds with a score of 2:0. Lewis hasn’t forgotten how to drive at all, but it just shows how much the result depends on the car, which is still the determining factor.”
