After qualifying, the Mercedes drivers unanimously said that they had not expected such results, so they are very happy to start from the front two rows. And Lewis Hamilton even promised to repeat his famous breakthrough at the start, from which his glorious career in Formula 1 on this Australian circuit began.
George Russell (2nd): “Absolutely, we didn’t expect such results! But the hard work on the team base and here at the Melbourne circuit is paying off, so qualifying went well.
The car worked great and in the last attempt I pushed to the limit, but to be honest I’m even a little angry that we didn’t get pole.
However, this is one of those cases where in our sport the level of your expectations changes very quickly. Yesterday we would have liked to show the fourth or fifth results. But today the car made a great impression and I can say with certainty that we have not yet fully revealed its potential.
But something has to go the way it has to. Days are good and not so good, you just have to figure out what it depends on. Today’s result suits us well and tomorrow’s race promises to be very interesting, we will try to compete with Max, although it won’t be easy.
Lewis Hamilton (3rd): “It was totally unexpected and I am very proud of our team. George did a great job today because to be honest we could only dream that both Mercedes would start from the front two rows.
We’re all working really hard to get back into the lead and today we managed to get really close to Red Bull – it’s incredibly cool! Hopefully we can compete with them tomorrow and let’s hope the weather is nice on Sunday.
I am very happy to start from this position and tomorrow I will try to do everything in my power. My goal is to break through to the first starting position! Let’s see if it works, but I hope in the 1st corner everything will be the same as in my first race on this circuit in 2007! I don’t know if everyone remembers what it was like, but I hope we can.”
