Max Verstappen won qualifying in Melbourne for the first time in his career. Max said he was happy with his lap, but as it is not easy to control tire wear on the city circuit, he is preparing for an exciting battle with rivals in the race.
Team-mate Max Sergio Perez went off the track with brake problems in the first part of qualifying and ended the battle for pole ahead of schedule.
Max Verstappen (1st): “I think I made a good lap on the last attempt. All weekend it is very difficult to get the tires in working range to attack immediately, but I succeeded in the final. I am very happy with the circle and the fact that I took pole. Now I look forward to the race.
In qualifying I almost knocked down a pigeon, but fortunately this was avoided. This sometimes happens on city roads.
I’m not worried about reliability issues. I believe that we have found the right settings and that we can continue in the same spirit. I think our car will be fast in the race. It’s not easy to control tire wear on this circuit, so the battle is expected to be interesting.
I’ve only been on the podium once at this circuit, but this Sunday I want to take the next step forward.”
Sergio Perez (no time): “Very bad result, terrible day. Even in the third practice session I had problems, but before qualifying we thought we had solved them, but in reality we didn’t. I really hope that the problems are solved by tomorrow’s race, otherwise it will be very difficult.
I don’t want to go into details, but we have to work as a team to get everything right before the start. In a race it is very important to try to minimize losses.”
