If Charles Leclerc took pole in Melbourne, the qualifying final was not a success for his team-mate Carlos Sainz. The first fast lap had to be interrupted due to red flags and for the second the car didn’t start right away – and he couldn’t warm up the tires…
Charles Leclerc (1st): “I am very satisfied with the result. I’ve had problems at Albert Park in the past and I couldn’t avoid it this weekend either. It may not be noticeable from the outside, but I made a lot of mistakes, I had no stability. I worked hard to set a fast lap in the final. I knew I had to do it – and I did.
The hardest for me was in the first and sixth corners – the turning point is passed at a very high speed, but because of my driving style I am having trouble passing these corners. You have to act as accurately as possible – I worked hard on this and was able to drive the first and sixth corners the way I wanted on a fast lap. I am satisfied.”
Carlos Sainz (9th): “There was a problem with the starter. The car failed to start, so I left the track three minutes later than planned.
I had to rush to do a fast lap, I couldn’t get the tires warmed up properly and tried on cold tires. It was horrible.
Everything went wrong for me in the final of qualifying. I’m sure I can take pole today, but sometimes the conditions are against you.
Mattia Binotto knows I’m upset. With the starter we should not have such problems. This is a disaster. I could win pole! Today the day is ruined, even if someone says it isn’t, but tomorrow is another day – I will try to win back.
