Trident driver Gabriel Bortoleto won the Formula 3 race in Melbourne on Sunday with his second career win. Together with him, Grégoire Sosi and Gabriele Mini climbed the podium.
Bortoleto confidently kept the lead at the start, Mini tried to attack Sosi in the first corner, but the ART driver kept second position. The battle continued throughout the pack – between Sebastian Montoya and Christian Mansell there was a contact that led to Sebastian’s retirement.
In the third corner of lap two, Dino Beganovich hit Franco Colapinto’s car, resulting in a puncture for the MP Motorsport driver. In Turn 5, Colapinto lost his footing and crashed his car, resulting in yellow flags.
At the tenth corner, Marie Boya hit Nikola Tsolova’s car, flew into the air and landed in the gravel. A safety car entered the track, with Kaylen Frederik, after contact with Tsolov, crashing into the wall and getting out.
The race resumed on the sixth lap of twenty-three. At the restart, the top ten held their position and Bortoleto immediately showed the best lap in an attempt to create a lead over the peloton.
At the end of the sixth lap, Piotr Vishnitsky crashed the car on the last corner. Only he with a broken rear suspension could pull away and return to the pit lane.
On the eleventh lap, Roberto Faria returned to the pit lane and retired. On lap 12 Rafael Villagomez attacked Ido Cohen in turn 3 but his front wheel hit the right rear wheel of Rodin Carlin’s car – Cohen spun and was thrown into the wall. The safety car came out on track for the second time and Villagomez received a ten-second penalty.
The restart was given on the sixteenth lap – in the top ten the riders kept their position. At the end of the lap, Oliver Goethe pitted to change tyres. On lap eighteen, Luke Browning moved up to sixth and overtook Paul Aron. Grégoire Sausi showed the best time and reduced the gap on the leading Bortoleto to six tenths.
On lap nineteen, José Maria Marti, who started last, overtook Johnny Edgar and moved up to tenth.
On the last lap Nikita Bedrin lost control of the car in the first corner, it was flipped and thrown into the wall all over the track. For driver Jenzer the race was over. Further on, Dino Beganovich hit the right rear wheel of Chao Collet’s car with his front wing, leading to a puncture, and the Brazilian rolled back outside the top ten.
Gabriel Bortoleto confidently took the race to victory and cemented his leadership in the individual standings. Grégoire Saucy, who finished second, kept the best lap. Gabriel Mini took the first podium of his career.
The next round of Formula 3 will take place in Imola on May 19-21, but before that the drivers will conduct two sets of tests: April 13-14 in Barcelona and April 18-19 in Imola.
