Australian Grand Prix promoter promises to improve

During the Australian leg of the championship, there were many incidents that required the intervention of the stewards and race management, and the press will be discussing their vague ending for a long time to come.

But not only the racing events themselves, but also the situation that arose on the track, as a result of which representatives of the promoter of the Australian Grand Prix were called to the FIA carpet, required a separate trial.

This is how the situation is described in Stewards whitepaper #55: “A large group of spectators managed to break through the safety lines and onto the track while the race was still underway. The foreseen safety measures and protocols were not applied, leaving spectators, riders and employees working on the race in unsafe conditions.

In addition, spectators were also able to reach the #27 car parked at the exit of Turn 2 with its red light still flashing (i.e. the car was in an unsafe condition and an electrical discharge could not be ruled out).

All this posed a serious danger to spectators, racers and employees working on the race.”

The stewards qualified the incident as a violation of Article 12.2.1.h of the FIA International Sports Code, i.e. stated that insufficient measures had been taken to prevent an unsafe situation.

The stewards studied the available video information, after which they heard the representatives of the promoter, who frankly admitted the fact of the violation, that such situations are unacceptable, as they can lead to serious consequences.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation pledged to conduct its own detailed investigation, consult with the FIA, Formula 1 and Victoria Police, and make improvements by the 2024 race. present a plan to rectify the situation, which should be done by 30 June this year.

However, the federation has not yet said the last word, a formal investigation is underway, the World Motor Sport Council will be notified of the incident and a decision will be made on possible sanctions at the level of this structure.
