Yuki Tsunoda finished eleventh in Melbourne, but moved up to tenth after applying a five-second penalty from Carlos Sainz. The earned point was the first of the season for the Japanese rider and the AlphaTauri team.
Nick de Vries retired after being knocked off the track by Logan Sargent on the second restart.
Yuki Tsunoda (10th): “I have mixed feelings. We got our first point of the season, which is good, but to be honest, given our pace, I didn’t think we could finish in the top ten today. Before the red flags I was having a lot of trouble getting the hard tires into the working range so we should be happy with tenth as we maxed out.
It’s a pity that I lost fifth position, which I held after the first corner on the restart, overtaking several cars. The positive results include the point earned – we will continue to work hard to earn even more in the next races.
Nick deVries (retirement): “Sorry, but the racing incident with Logan ended my race. Today we had serious problems, but in the first laps on the Hard tyres, we managed a lot. Unfortunately, when the red flags came out, everyone who started on Medium got a “free” pit stop and moved to Hard.
During the race I damaged the front wing, which led to understeer and tire granulation. The fight in the middle group is very tight, so we will keep working and attacking to move up the ranks.”
