Nico Hulkenberg finished seventh in Australia, earning his first points of the season. His Haas teammate Kevin Magnussen crashed the car by running into the wall in Turn 2, causing the race to be stopped by red flags.
Nico Hulkenberg (7th): “At times the race turned into wild chaos. A lot happened on the track, but I managed to overcome everything and avoid problems. The third start went particularly well – I moved up to fourth, so it’s a shame there were several incidents then and the race was stopped with red flags.
We learned a lot of positive things this weekend. I feel rested, I have a very positive attitude, I like working with the team and experimenting with the car. We have picked up the pace and we want to maintain that in the next races.”
Kevin Magnussen (retirement): “I hit a wall coming out of turn 2 and broke the rim coming off the tire, so I had to stop. I didn’t even feel the impact, so it wasn’t very strong, but it was enough to break the disc. At that point I was twelfth and it didn’t look like I could score any points.
We were unlucky with the first red flags as I just pitted, took eleventh place and was faster than the two opponents in front of me. At that stage of the race I was very confident in our chances.
I pitted while in the safety car, and then the red flags came out. Everyone changed tires to get to the finish without pit stops and I finished last. Not my day, although the car had good pace, which is good. Let’s try to attack next time.”
