The stewards call on Formula 1 to review the rules for the formation of the peloton behind the safety car before the restart.
Last Sunday, the racers returned to the pit lane when the race was halted with red flags after Alex Albon’s accident. Then a restart was announced, the riders returned to the track and lined up in the required order. Many slowed down in turn six to keep order – Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Esteban Ocon, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz slowed down seriously.
Unaware of this, Guanyu Zhou, Valtteri Bottas, Logan Sargent and Kevin Magnussen entered the corner at high speed and were forced to take action to avoid the crash, sending Magnussen even flying into the gravel.
The stewards decided not to penalize any of the drivers, but explained that it was caused by George Russell’s slow exit from the pit lane.
“Car #63 pulled slowly out of the pit lane and then accelerated to make up the gap. As a result, the other cars behind car #63 left the pit lane with a delay and also accelerated,” the stewards explained.
One of the reasons for creating a dangerous situation, the stewards consider a regulation item that would allow the leader to set the pace, even if the restart is made from one place. They urged Formula 1 management and the FIA to consider this scenario to see if it is suitable for this type of restart in future grands prix.
