One of the spectators at the Australian Grand Prix cut his hand with a piece of Kevin Magnussen’s car. Will Sweet told local radio station 3AW that he and his fiancée were standing on a busy hill just past Turn 2 with his fiancé. After Magnussen crashed into the fence, the wreckage of the car flew through the security fence into the crowd, one of them hitting his arm.
“The chip dug into my arm and I stood there bleeding,” Sweet said. “I covered my neck with this hand, but if a piece of debris flew into my bride, it would hit her in the head. I saw how big and heavy the piece was. It had very sharp edges. I don’t dare think what would have happened to me if the fragment had hit me from a different angle.
The Australian press published a photo of Sweet with a bloody wreck of the car, and another photo showing the track’s medical workers treating him. Sweet added that there were many children on the hill next to him, and no officials came to the rescue immediately after the incident.
On Monday, Australian stage promoter Andrew Westacott promised organizers would investigate the incident.
“Debris barriers are the same all over the world. We abide by the FIA rules,” Westacott assured the Australian press.
