Alex Albon: Red flags got in my way

Both Williams riders did not make it out of the first part of Australian Grand Prix qualifying: Alex Albon set the 16th fastest time and Nicholas Latifi became a participant in the Lance Stroll accident.

After the end of the session on the way to the pits, the engineer asked Albon to stop on the track – then the reason was not clear, but later it turned out that during the technical inspection the necessary liter of fuel could not be removed from Alex’s tank ‘ car.

Alex Albon (16th): “It’s a shame we didn’t make it to the second part of qualifying. The team did a great job of maximizing the car’s capabilities – we were able to compete for a higher result.

We noticed that it takes a few quick laps to get the tires in range. Unfortunately I had to stop the second lap on the second set of tires because of red flags. I feel we deserved more today, but we will try to earn back tomorrow.

Nicholas Latific (19th): “I have watched the recording of the collision – it is clear to me who is to blame. I missed Lance when they told me he had a fast lap. Apparently he slowed down after that. I had to continue my lap to prepare the tires for the attempt. There was a lot of space on the track, I decided to overtake Lance, but when we overtook him he turned in my direction for some reason.

The touch itself was light, but it had serious consequences. The car was badly damaged – let’s see what our mechanics can do. I know from this point of view our team is one of the best. This development is the last thing I wanted. The goal was to have a clean weekend, so the result is disappointing.”
