Toto Wolff: Track features helped us in Melbourne

In Melbourne, Lewis Hamilton finished second and gave Mercedes its first podium of the season. Team leader Toto Wolff said the Australian circuit’s characteristics, which suited the W14 car well, largely contributed to this result.

Toto Wolff: “I think we took a step forward in Melbourne by adding both a fast lap and race distance. But is the current speed the basis, but on the basis of which we can continue in the future? I’m not sure, but we definitely squeezed the most out of what we squeezed.

It’s nice to see a battle with Ferrari and Aston Martin, but now we need to gain a foothold at the current level. The more the team learns about the car and prepares new items, the more we can impose a fight on the leaders.

Red Bull has a staggering speed advantage with open DRS on the straights, but if someone in our sport has a car that can do that then it’s possible and we need to find a way to make our car that fast.

Our car lacks the efficiency of the rear, but the characteristics of the Australian track helped us a lot. That’s why we looked a little better than we should have. In any case, the team knows the weaknesses and knows what needs to be done to eliminate them.”
