After the Australian Grand Prix, Lance Stroll joked that he should offer Leclerc a beer as a thank you for not blaming him for the first lap collision that caused Charles to retire immediately after the start of the race.
Leclerc tried to get ahead of the Canadian in turn 3, but his Ferrari and Aston Martin made contact, after which the red car flew off the track and ended up in a gravel trap. However, Charles, commenting on this episode, said he was not inclined to blame Lance as it was a racing incident.
When told about this Stroll, he exclaimed, “Oh, it’s nice to hear from him! I have to buy him a beer! But it was really a racing incident. The track is narrow and before the third corner I slowed down, between him and Fernando Alonso. I didn’t move anywhere, but found myself in a vise between two cars, after which contact ensued. Charles was not lucky and luckily my car was not damaged.
Stroll ran in the top ten for the whole race, but on the second restart, which was given on lap 57, he failed to keep the car on track at the same turn 3 and ended up on the side of the road, causing him to lost many positions. But as the pack lined up in the same order as the cars on lap 56 before the final restart, Lance got back 5th place, who was 4th after the penalty inflicted on Carlos Sainz.
“I was already sad, but when I finally crossed the finish line I was happy with the result,” said Stroll of his experience at the end of the race. – I was very upset after the start in the 3rd corner, because there were only a few laps to go before the finish. But I blocked the front wheels when I was defending against Carlos Sainz, and I thought I missed the chance to get on the podium.
It was indeed very difficult at the penultimate restart. The tires were completely cold, I felt it coming out of the 2nd turn: as soon as I started accelerating, the car almost spun. Then, before Turn 3, I defended against Carlos, who was on the outside, then I ended up on the dirty part of the track and as soon as I tried to brake, the right front wheel locked up and I couldn’t slow down.
To be honest, I was lucky to be able to get out at all because the day before I saw Sergio Perez get stuck in the gravel, but we got out anyway.
