Michael Masi stepped down as F1 race director after the controversial 2021 World Cup final in Abu Dhabi, which saw Max Verstappen clinch his maiden title. According to the results of an official investigation, his mistakes that affected the result of the season were proven.
This year in Melbourne, Masi returned to the Formula 1 paddock for the first time as independent chairman of the Australian Supercars Series Commission, speaking about seeking psychological help after the incident – and about his new life.
On the way to the autodrome, Masi was booed by the fans. There were no meetings with Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff (“No Michael, no”) in Melbourne. Lewis said he’s focused on the future, not the past, so he sees no point in dating.
Michael Masi: “Honestly, I was a little nervous. Working in Formula 1 and constant travel has greatly influenced my life. I literally lived in an airplane. Now I enjoy being back home, cooking, spending time with family and friends, attending weddings and parties.
When I had to leave the FIA I advised my parents to avoid social media. They can be very toxic. In many ways, social media is a great tool, but in other ways it’s not so great.
I was threatened with death. This had a huge impact and eventually I started looking for professional psychological help. I probably did it later than I should have. For too much time I paid little attention to my mental health. Luckily it’s quieter now.”
