Vasseur: I like the new sprint weekend format

Baku will host the first weekend of this year at the end of April with a sprint on Saturday – in a different format than in previous seasons.

We wrote that in Melbourne the participants were discussing the new format, the head of the Ferrari team, Frederic Vasseur, said that everyone showed a rare unanimity at the same time, so that the formal approval of the FIA remained.

Frederic Wasser: “For once, all teams were unanimous. It doesn’t happen often, you should have used it. I like the new format. During sprint weekends, Saturday practice was often boring, so we decided to try something more dynamic.

This is a good decision. In football, you don’t watch practices on Wednesdays when they train at the stadium, and we’re probably the only sport where practices are shown on TV.

So in Baku we will have two qualifying sessions and two races – and as a team we have to work in the best possible way.

We wrote that the essence of the changes is the replacement of the second Saturday practice, which was previously useless, as it took place in a closed park, with the second qualifying.

On Friday morning, the teams will hold the weekend’s only one-hour practice session and in the afternoon the main qualifying session, which will determine the starting order for Sunday’s Grand Prix. The winner is called the owner of the pole position.

Qualifying for the sprint race takes place on Saturday morning and the sprint itself in the afternoon.

On Sunday, the Grand Prix will be held in the usual format.
