Wolff: Allison continues to be an important figure in the company

James Ellison commented on the results of the Australian Grand Prix in Mercedes’ traditional review last week, after which talks began about his return to the team, in which he has been technical director since 2017, becoming technical director in 2021. However, at the same time, he also carried out the engineering management of the Ineos Britannia project, which is not related to motorsport.

Toto Wolff clarified what Allison’s duties will be in 2023, emphasizing that this highly experienced and valuable specialist is now mainly involved in the yacht project and also in strategic planning.

“James is not involved in team affairs, but takes an active role in the process of discussing long-term strategy,” said Mercedes AMG F1 team principal. “However, he now devotes his time to other duties, including working with the Ineos Britannia yacht team competing in the America’s Cup, as well as other programs that require an innovative approach.”

Wolff also made it clear that he doesn’t think it’s wise to give Ellison the full job of resolving the situation of a team that started the season worse than expected, as only the entire team as a whole can do it.

“James continues to be a very important figure in our organization. Quite apart from the difficulties we are now facing, I don’t think one person should be responsible for its elimination. We need to involve more specialists with the necessary qualifications and properly distribute their roles,” added Wolff.
