Johnny Herbert doesn’t know why he was fired from Sky Sport

In January we reported that Johnny Herbert, a former Formula 1 driver, was fired from the British TV channel Sky Sports, with whom he worked for ten years, but only now has he admitted that this development came as an unpleasant surprise to him .

“It wasn’t me who decided to leave – I thought everything would continue,” Herbert told Mirror Sport. – And then they called me in December and said the situation was changing. It has not been explained to me why this is happening and what exactly has changed. So I don’t even know.

Sky constantly monitors what subscribers think of the channel’s programs and rate TV presenters on a 10-point scale. And I was always aware that I was consistently popular. It’s a pity, but now it’s in the past and I’m moving on.”

This year, Herbert will host his own Lift the Lid podcast (which can be translated as “lift the helmet visor”) with British racing driver Billy Monger, where together they analyze Formula 1 races, tell stories based on their personal experiences in different types of motorsport competitions, and answer fan questions.

“Working with Billy is very interesting. But there are other possibilities, which reaffirms that if you work hard, you can find other ways to advance your career so that your connection to your favorite sport is not interrupted,” emphasized Johnny.

For example, in a recent episode of the podcast, Herbert answered the question of whether it is fair to allow riders to change tires when the Grand Prix is suspended by red flags.

“Honestly, I think it’s a pretty fair rule,” says Johnny. – Although when I was in Formula 1 there was no such rule and we had to continue the race on the tires we were on before the race was stopped. After that, it was necessary to move on and then either change the tires at the planned pit stop, or try to get to the finish already.

Will racing be more interesting because everyone can change tires? I think so because on fresh tires the riders can attack very aggressively and we have seen more than once that the end of the Grand Prix turned out to be very interesting. So in my opinion, the sport will only benefit from this.
