Elbon: People misinterpreted my words

Williams racer Alex Albon decided to clarify his own reasoning, which was published over a month ago in the pages of the Players’ Tribune.

Then he literally wrote the following: “Honestly, I don’t want to cast a shadow on anyone from Red Bull Racing, Max or anyone else, but this car is uniquely tuned, it’s built around the main driver and this is Max. . And of course I understand why.

He may be the greatest driver of all time, but he has a very special style of driving. He likes it when the car is set up in a certain way, which doesn’t suit many other drivers.”

As Albon has now stated in an interview with the sports section of the London tabloid Daily Express, he just wanted to say that Verstappen is the best at finding the right fit for the Red Bull Racing cars, but it just so happens that Max preferably in his own way.

“I think people thought the car could be designed around the preferences of a driver who is very fast and wants to set the car in a certain way, and that was confusing to them,” said Alex. “Of course the team listens to the driver who gets high results and performs better, because he is able to fully unlock the potential of the car.

I don’t feel guilty about anything, but people misinterpreted my words because they thought I meant to say that the car was built specifically for Max. No, but the fact is that he knows how to approach her and pilots in a certain way. And you have to guess what are the peculiarities of his approach, because in the end it is he who manages to get the machine to work. To be fair, that’s the difference.”

Some pundits also suggested that Red Bull Racing mainly relies on Verstappen to the detriment of other racers. All former partners of the Dutchman struggled when they played for this team, as neither Pierre Gasly nor Albon managed to show results on Max’s level.

However, David Coulthard, who once played for this team and still works with it, strongly disagrees with this view. The Dutch edition of Formula 1 quotes him as follows: “Verstappen can already be called a great racer. Only an idiot can claim that he only wins because he has a good car. The same goes for Lewis Hamilton, he doesn’t need to win nine world titles to be considered one of the best drivers in Formula 1 history. So Max doesn’t have to become a three-time champion to qualify as one of the best.”
